Rick J. Delanty is a Californian by birth and in spirit, finding in this state a love for nature and wonder of Creation which he has continued to explore in his colorful and expressive oil and acrylic landscape paintings. Rick is a national award-winning artist in plein air competitions around the West, and in exhibitions across the United States, including the California Art Club’s Gold Medal show.
As my family hiked a coastal trail near Big Sur State Park, I looked down to see a small stream cascading over some rocks beneath bright green leaves of the underbrush. The purity of the scene caught my eye, the fresh water jumping over the rocks, the light bouncing around the leaves, the bubbling sound of the brook against the rocks. For this painting, I wanted to translate the movement of the natural scene into a painting, through emphasizing spots of bright color among dark rocks, splatters of paint laid over large patchy shapes, and cool and warm temperature accents across the painting surface. A “mini-explosion” is what I had in mind, to evoke the energy of nature.
